Premier Boxing Champions finalizes deal with Fox Sports 1

The march of Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions series across the television landscape continued Tuesday with the expected announcement that he has finalized a deal with yet another network.

Fox Sports 1 announced that PBC will be its exclusive boxing provider and that the cable sports network will televise 21 cards through June 2016. They will take place on Tuesday nights, hence the FS1 marketing slogan of "Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays." The fights will be simulcast on Spanish-language network Fox Deportes.

Since its debut on NBC in prime time on March 7, PBC, which purchases the time for its cards using the some of the roughly $450 million Haymon raised from investors, has rolled out one network deal after another. It now has deals to be the exclusive boxing programming provider with NBC, NBC Sports Net, CBS, ESPN/ESPN Deportes, Spike TV, Bounce TV and now FS1/Fox Deportes.

The PBC deal with FS1 replaces the network's deal with Golden Boy Promotions. FS1 had been paying rights fees to Golden Boy for its cards over the past few years but that deal recently expired.

"We've been invested in boxing as a cornerstone property since launching Fox Sports 1," said David Nathanson, head of business operations for Fox Sports. "Premier Boxing Champions delivers high-profile, high-quality programming that is breaking viewership records in the boxing space. There is no question that this deal makes Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes true destinations for boxing fans."

In making the series announcement, the first four fight cards were also unveiled, beginning with the debut on Sept. 8 (9 p.m. ET), although none of the sites have been locked in.

Here are the fights that were announced:

• Sept.8: Former junior middleweight titlist Austin Trout (29-2, 16 KOs) against Joey Hernandez (24-3-1, 14 KOs) in the main event with junior featherweights Jorge Lara (27-0-1, 19 KOs) and Jesus Rojas (21-1-1, 15 KOs) squaring off in the co-feature.

• Sept. 15: Rising welterweight contender Sammy Vasquez (19-0, 13 KOs) against Jose Lopez (25-3-1, 15 KOs). Light heavyweights Thomas Williams Jr. (18-1, 12 KOs) and Umberto Savigne (12-2, 9 KOs) will meet in the co-feature.

• Sept. 22: Junior middleweight contender Julian Williams (20-0-1, 12 KOs) takes on Luciano Cuello (35-3, 17 KOs). Junior featherweight Moises Flores (23-0, 16 KOs) will defend his interim title against Luis Emmanuel Cusolito (21-1, 19 KOs) in the co-feature.

• Sept. 29: Junior lightweight titlist Javier Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs) will make his first defense when he faces Carlos Velazquez (19-1, 12 KOs). In the co-feature, junior middleweight Domonique Dolton (17-0, 9 KOs) will face 2012 Mexican Olympian Oscar Molina (13-0, 10 KOs).

Brian Kenny, the former longtime host of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and, more recently, Showtime's "Showtime Championship Boxing," will serve as host of the series.

"I'm so excited to be working on Fox Sports 1 on this new PBC series," Kenny said. "We're looking forward to making boxing even more accessible to the fans, providing world class matchups and putting the spotlight on fighters, who deserve to be seen by both hardcore and mainstream fans. We will be real with the audience, show them respect and give them the landscape of the boxing world."

It has not been made official, but Gus Johnson, who has called various sports, including boxing on Showtime, is slated to be the blow-by-blow announcer. The analyst position has not been filled yet.

PBC on ESPN to debut July 11

Boxing adviser and manager Al Haymon's "Premier Boxing Champions" series is coming to ESPN and will replace stalwart show "Friday Night Fights" as the network's platform for live boxing beginning this summer, ESPN announced Wednesday.

ESPN and Haymon Boxing Management have finalized a long-rumored deal under which Haymon has purchased time on the network that will see the return of regular big-time fights to ESPN in prime time -- not ESPN2, where FNF has aired since 1998.

The monthly PBC series, which will feature many of the elite fighters from Haymon's star-studded stable of nearly 200 boxers, will debut on ESPN and ESPN Deportes on July 11 (9 p.m. ET) with a card that is to be announced.

The final show of "Friday Night Fights" will air May 22 on ESPN2, with the finals of the 2015 heavyweight and junior middleweight Boxcino tournaments. While the new deal means that ESPN will televise fewer cards than it has been, the quality should be significantly better with the PBC bouts.

"ESPN has a long history of carrying world-class boxing events and the new 'Premier Boxing Champions' series continues our commitment to the sport with premier-level prime-time fights previously only available on premium cable networks," ESPN president John Skipper said.

Although most of the PBC on ESPN cards will air on Saturday nights, the heavy fall schedule of college football means there will also be shows during the week.

Over the course of the two-year deal, which runs through July 2017, at least two of the 24 two-hour cards will air on ABC, ESPN's sister network, on Saturday afternoons. Haymon is buying the air time for the 24 cards. ESPN is footing the bill for the production. PBC holds an option for six additional cards. Haymon also has to pay the fighter purses and the other expenses related to putting on an event.

ESPN3.com will stream preliminary bouts from each card. It will also stream PBC on ESPN weigh-ins the day before the fights. Live coverage of the fights will also be available through WatchESPN on computers, smartphones, tablets, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One via an affiliated video provider.

The deal with ESPN, which will retain the worldwide rights to the fights and editorial control over the broadcast, is just the latest for Haymon in an ambitious project that has already altered the landscape of televised boxing in the United States as he continues to lock up one broadcast platform after another with a series of time-buy deals that include the return of boxing to three broadcast networks -- ABC, NBC and CBS -- after decades in which they largely ignored boxing.

Haymon's investors are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the PBC, which this year already announced deals with NBC/NBCSN (40 shows through 2016), CBS (at least eight shows this year in a multiyear deal), Spike TV (at least 33 monthly shows through 2017) and Bounce TV (monthly prospect-oriented cards beginning in July on the network Haymon helped found in 2011).

Haymon's PBC franchise launched with fanfare on NBC on March 7 with the network's first major prime-time fight in 30 years when welterweight titlist Keith Thurman outpointed Robert Guerrero in a slugfest in Las Vegas.

Six days later, the series premiered on Spike TV with former two-time welterweight titlist Andre Berto knocking out Josesito Lopez in the sixth round of an exciting fight in Ontario, California. PBC on CBS debuts on April 4 in Quebec City with an afternoon card headlined by light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson defending his title against former super middleweight titlist Sakio Bika.

Haymon does not speak to the media, and a spokesman for his organization did not return a message seeking comment on the ESPN deal, so his grand plan has not been outlined. It would appear that by bringing regular big-time boxing back to network television and basic cable -- even if his investors have to initially pay to do it -- he hopes the cards will bring in strong-enough viewership and advertising support. That way, networks will see boxing's value and eventually pay big money to air his fights the way Fox did when it agreed to a nine-figure annual deal with the UFC.

Although PBC on ESPN means the end of "Friday Night Fights" after a 17-year run, blow-by-blow announcer Joe Tessitore and analyst Teddy Atlas, both ringside fixtures, will continue in their roles on the PBC cards. Additional on-air commentators will be announced at a later date.

"It's bittersweet because 'Friday Night Fights' has been an integral part of boxing for 17 years at ESPN, but this opportunity to bring bigger and better fights to the network has been a long time coming," said ESPN's Brian Kweder, an ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions, who is responsible for boxing at the network.

While FNF had a studio portion of the show each week to cover the latest boxing news, there will not be a studio element on the PBC shows. However, Kweder said there will be time in the broadcast to go over the news of the week from the site of each card.

ESPN Joins Premier Boxing Champions’ Corner, Knocking Out ‘Friday Night Fights’

ESPN has signed a multiyear agreement to air Premier Boxing Champions, joining NBC and CBS as partners on the series created by Haymon Boxing to bring the sport to broadcast primetime for the first time in 30 years. The 11 two-hour annual live telecasts on ESPN (and one on ABC) will replace ESPN’s long-running Friday Night Fights series, which will air on May 22 for the final time after a 17-year run. The Friday Night Fights announcing team of Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will call the fights in the new series.

ESPN’s first Premier Boxing Champions telecast under the deal is set for Saturday, July 11, at 9 PM ET on ESPN and Spanish-language ESPN Deportes.

PBC premiered March 7 on NBC and fought its way to a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo from 8:30-11 PM in not-time zone adjusted fast affiliate ratings. That number is relatively on par with the average Saturday college football ratings in the fall and won the night for the network.

Under terms of the ESPN-ABC deal, ESPN telecasts will air live in primetime. ABC broadcasts will air on Saturday afternoon, with those details to be announced later. ESPN Deportes will also televise all PBC on ESPN fights as part of its Noche de Combates series. Live coverage will also be available through WatchESPN.

About Haymon Boxing

Haymon Boxing is based in Las Vegas, NV, and manages and advises more than 150 professional fighters.

CBS Laces Up Live ‘Premier Boxing Champions’ Series

A month after NBC announced it was bringing live boxing back to primetime network television, CBS is stepping into the ring. The network has signed a multi-year deal with adviser-manager Al Haymon’s Haymon Boxing — the outfit behind the Peacock’s fight deal — for Premier Boxing Champions, a series of Saturday afternoon bouts. Under the pact, Haymon fights also will continue airing on its sister premium channel Showtime.

PBC on CBS will answer the bell on April 4 with a WBC light heavyweight championship bout and return in May, June, July and September. The network — which hasn’t had regular live boxing since the Clinton administration — will air as many as eight events in 2015, with others possibly on CBS Sports Network.

This is the third TV deal for Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions in the past two months, including the primetime NBC fights and matches on Spike TV. Those deals combine for a minimum of 73 live cards to air on NBC, NBC Sports Network and Spike through 2017. Veteran announcer Al Michaels will host the NBC series, will mark the first boxing on the network since it showed Larry Holmes vs. Carl “The Truth” Williams in 1985.

Jim Lampley will call Mayweather-Pacquiao fight against Mayweather wishes

Jim Lampley of HBO Sports will call the much anticipated Mayweather-Pacquiao fight despite the reservations of Mayweather.

Jim Lampley, the prominent play-by-play boxing announcer of our day, will call the much-anticipated and highly overdue Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight set to tilt on the evening of May 2.

There was some question about the arrangement due to some complicated handlings in just how the fight came about. In fact, those conflicts are probably what kept the fight from coming together for so long.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, the talks which finally led to the two meeting in the ring, were the third of their kind over the past six years. What was holding it up?

Most notably, the fact that Floyd Mayweather has an exclusive arrangement with the Showtime network for six fights, which he signed back in 2013. Pacquiao, at the same time, signed a two-year deal last year to air all of his fights on HBO.

Hence, bringing the two together was about much more than their willingness to actually spar against one another. It was a money and logistics issue in bringing together just who would air the fight.

But CBS executive Les Moonves was finally able to present a brilliant compromise whereby both networks will broadcast the fight. It will remain a logistical nightmare, or at least be quite tough, but the networks have set in motion a working deal which figures to produce a viewing arrangement equaling somewhere north of a quarter of a billion bucks.

As part of the arrangement, Showtime and HBO commentators will work together. Jim Lampley, as HBO’s head boxing announcer, will be providing play-by-play. This comes despite the contention of Mayweather.

Mayweather was hesitant to move forward with the arrangement in part because he doesn’t exactly see eye-to-eye with Lampley, who has not held back criticism toward Mayweather in the past.

Lampley will be joined ringside by his normal partner Roy Jones as well as Showtime’s Al Bernstein. Max Kellerman of HBO and Jim Gray will work the respective locker rooms, similar to an NFL arrangement where CBS takes mostly AFC coverage and Fox NFC.

The pre-fight show will be hosted by Showtime’s James Brown and Paulie Malignaggi.

The 5’8” Mayweather remains undefeated in his career, winning all 47 professional fights he has taken part in, registering 26 knockouts. Pacquiao, the 5’7” Philippines native, has fought more, with slightly less success.

In 64 career fights, Pacquiao has won 57 times, losing five times and ending two bouts in a draw.

The success of each, though, is the main reason this is such an anticipated fight.

With boxing's return to prime-time network TV, Al Haymon makes his move

A new fight series on NBC represents boxing’s most committed attempt in three decades to breaking down the premium cable paywall it’s built around itself

The embattled, endlessly absorbing sport of prizefighting returns to American prime-time network television on Saturday night with the debut of a new series called Premier Boxing Champions (8.30pm ET, NBC), a bold foray aimed at broadening the sport’s mainstream audience.

The enterprise is the brainchild of Al Haymon, the reclusive Harvard-educated businessman widely regarded as boxing’s most powerful figure, not least due to his nebulous role in Floyd Mayweather Jr’s inner circle: part manager, part consigliere, part svengali. And not unlike the unorthodox financial model he’s put in place that’s made Mayweather Jr the world’s highest-earning athlete, Haymon’s designs for the Premier Boxing Champions franchise are predicated on the absorption of upfront risk for greater back-end gains.

Haymon, backed by private investors, has spent $20m to purchase airtime for 20 shows this year on NBC and NBC Sports Network, an inversion of the traditional sports TV model where the network pays for the rights to air an event. He will recoup costs by pocketing revenue on advertising during PBC shows – but also in building the profiles of the fighters he’s contracted on a platform with far greater reach than premium cable.

While there have been one-off fights on free-to-air TV through the years – a Mike Tyson comeback bout on Fox in 1995, Bernard Hopkins-Glen Johnson on CBS in 1997 – Saturday’s PBC premiere represents the sport’s most committed attempt in three decades to breaking down the paywall it’s built around itself.

That paradigm has proven wildly profitable for a select few promoters and fighters – consider Mayweather Jr is the richest athlete on the planet despite not bringing in a single penny from endorsements – but it’s come at the expense of the sport’s overall health and mainstream visibility.

“Boxing has an incredible, loyal fan base, but it’s a fan base that’s been deprived a little bit,” former HBO boxing czar turned promoter Lou DiBella told the Guardian last month. “Pay 70 bucks and see a couple of bad fights followed by a main event that may or may not be. Even a boxing event that does tremendous pay-per-view numbers is going to pale in comparison the kind of rating you can get on NBC in prime time. More people will likely see these first few shows in prime time on NBC that have seen any of the major pay-per-views going back a decade.

“In the history of pay-per-view, you have three fights that hit the two-million benchmark. Here’s a potential for audiences well in excess of that and the reintroduction of the sport to the sports fan, not just the hardcore boxing fan.”

The chassis of the fledgling franchise is attractive. NBC has tabbed broadcasting icons Al Michaels and Marv Albert to call the fights, Sugar Ray Leonard as color commentator and Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer to write the original score, while making investments in new camera technology it says will “give the audience an unprecedented insight into the action”.

But it’s the engine – the promise of well-matched fights between elite fighters on the regular – that gives Premier Boxing Champions the feel of a winner.

Take Saturday’s debut show from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas: Keith Thurman (24-0, 21 KOs), a crowd-pleasing knockout artist from Florida, will defend his WBA welterweight title against Robert Guerrero (32-2-1, 18 KOs), a former beltholder in four divisions. Both are widely considered top-10 contenders in boxing’s talent-stacked 147lb division. Earlier, the blustery former three-division champion Adrien Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) will face hard-punching John Molina (27-5, 20 KOs) in the co-main at junior welterweight. Neither fight would be out of place on HBO or Showtime, boxing’s traditional premium-cable purveyors.

A second NBC prime-time telecast scheduled for 11 April will feature a long-awaited meeting between Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

So far, so good. But whether such high-quality matchups can be consistently delivered remains to be seen, especially when you consider Haymon’s commitment of 20 shows to NBC is only part of his vision for the franchise. He’s made similar time-buys with CBS, Spike TV and digital multicast network Bounce TV to broadcast additional PBC shows. A deal with ESPN said to be in the works.

But Lamont Jones, vice president of operations for the series, is optimistic Haymon has the talent under contract to maintain quality control – and stresses the organizational priority of establishing brand loyalty.

“The way the customer goes to the grocery store and sees USDA on the steak and wants to buy it, we want the boxing fan to see to PBC on the telecast and know they can expect high-quality, competitive matchups,” said Jones, adding that Haymon’s roll of talent now exceeds 150 fighters under contract.

Haymon, who seldom ventures into public, refuses all interviews and operates exclusively behind the scenes, left many insiders pondering his endgame as he quietly stockpiled that stable over the past few years. No longer.

Whether it can restore boxing’s mass appeal is uncertain. But with Haymon pulling the strings, you’d be hard-pressed to bet against it.

ITV boosts EFL & Carabao Cup coverage with live free-to-air games

Freeview viewers will be able to access a selection of live games from the English Football League (EFL) Championship and Carabao Cup starting in 2025.

  • ITV extends existing EFL highlights deal
  • 5 matches from the 2024-2025 EFL Championship and 10 matches per subsequent season to be shown live on ITV1 or ITV4.
  • Sky Sports to screen full set of televised games on Sky Sports+ streaming service.

Sky Sports and ITV have reached an agreement in principle which will give all UK football fans the chance to watch free-to-air coverage of select Carabao Cup and Championship fixtures.

However, the deal won’t start until January 2025. Live coverage will start with the Carabao Cup semi-finals. As part of the deal, ITV will show five live EFL Championship games during the second half of the 2024-25 season.

Then during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons, ITV will broadcast 10 live EFL Championship games per season and at least nine Carabao Cup matches. This will include one tie from each of the first four rounds, one additional tie from either the third and fourth round, two quarter-final ties, one semi-final and the final itself.

The deal will be welcomed by ITV, who faced a hole in its football coverage after losing the rights to show live FA Cup football from the 2025-26 season.

Sky Sports will continue to broadcast the full set of televised football matches. It plans to do so via its new Sky Sports+ streaming service, alongside its traditional Sky Sports Football channel.

Separately, ITV has extended its existing EFL highlights deal for the coming three seasons. The broadcaster will screen at least 55 highlights shows per season.

The deal offers stability in terms of coverage after a decade that has seen the highlights switch between the BBC, Channel 5 and Quest before arriving on ITV.

Where to watch EFL and Carabao Cup free-to-air

ITV’s EFL and Carabao Cup coverage will be shown on either ITV1 or ITV4 and live streamed on ITVX.

Sky Sports and ITV agree deal in principle to broadcast select Carabao Cup and EFL Championship fixtures free-to-air from 2025

Sky Sports and ITV have reached an agreement in principle which will give all UK football fans the chance to watch free-to-air coverage of select Carabao Cup and Championship fixtures.

The new deal starts in January 2025, commencing with the Carabao Cup semi-finals, running until the end of the 2026/27 season and means ITV will jointly broadcast a select number of games also available on Sky Sports. The new arrangement has also been approved by EFL Clubs in accordance with the League’s regulations. Each full season, ITV will screen at least nine Carabao Cup matches in total, including:

  • one tie from each of the first four rounds
  • one additional tie from either the third or fourth round
  • two quarter-final ties
  • one semi-final tie
  • the final

Additionally, ITV will simulcast 10 matches from the EFL Championship each full season, and five matches in the second half of the 2024/25 season, with the option to flex their selection to matches from League One or League Two.

The deal comes as EFL and Sky Sports kick-off their ground-breaking partnership at the start of the 2024/25 season, with over 1,000 matches every season broadcast live - four times as many matches as now and all 72 teams featured over 20 times a season. This huge number of games will be brought to sports fans via Sky Sports+ which comprises multiple live streams, a new dedicated channel and revamped Sky Sports mobile app, all at no extra cost for Sky Sports subscribers. EFL clubs will enjoy unprecedented exposure as a result, and the additional reach of ITV from 2025 ensures more of the action from the League will be available to broader audiences and millions of football fans.

As part of ITV’s long-standing partnership with the EFL, it will also be extending its existing EFL highlights deal, beginning at the start of the forthcoming 2024/25 season, by broadcasting 55 highlights programmes per season. These matches and highlights will be shown across ITV1 and ITV4, with simultaneous streaming and on demand viewing available on ITVX.

Jonathan Licht, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: “This momentous upcoming season of over 1,000 matches from the EFL on Sky Sports+ shows our huge ambition and increased dedication to the EFL and its supporters. Working with a free-to-air broadcaster isn’t new for us and many of our partners, as we endeavour to help grow and broaden audiences for sports.

“With ITV set to simulcast a select number of matches from the EFL from 2025 alongside Sky Sports full coverage, it means that millions of football fans in the UK will be able to enjoy plenty of action from the Cup and League, boosting the exposure for clubs which is great news for all.”

Niall Sloane, ITV Director of Sport said: “This deal brings viewers free to air coverage of top level knockout football over the coming years, as well as standout matches from the EFL, adding regular live matches to our highlights shows. We’re looking forward to bringing fans some superb action and insight from this new, fuller EFL package across the next few seasons.”

Trevor Birch, Chief Executive Officer of the EFL said: “We’re delighted to continue a long-standing relationship with ITV, in partnership with Sky Sports, to deliver an added showcasing of the best of the EFL to a wider audience. We want the EFL to be accessible to as many audiences as possible, and this extra offering, with no additional subscription required, only enhances our reputation. I’d like to thank both organisations for their ongoing support and genuine commitment to all EFL competitions.”

Sky is the undisputed home for sports fans in the UK, with more top-quality sport than anywhere else. Record audiences tuned in to Sky Sports in 2023 and with key rights secured until the end of the decade, sports fans can access more of the sports they love than ever before.

This new deal adds to ITV’s portfolio of first-class Sport events, which also includes the forthcoming UEFA EURO 2024 Tournament, Horse Racing, Six Nations rugby, England Men’s football international qualifiers, Nations League and friendly matches returning in Autumn 2024, England Women football matches, the FA Cup, La Liga, the Tour de France, the NFL, the Investec Champions Cup, Gallagher Premiership Rugby and, in motorsport, Extreme E, British Touring Car Championships and MotoGP, SailGP, plus major competitions in snooker and darts.
